Philosophy

A true education embraces the harmonious development of one’s mental, physical and spiritual powers. It prepares and individual to meet challenges of this world as well as preparing him to be fitted for the joy of service in this world and the world to come.

Goal
To equip students with essential skills and competence in teaching and research that will make them unique educators wherever they will be.

Vision
The School of Education envisions training teachers who will dedicate their lives to facilitating their learners to develop to their full potential in all aspects of their lives.

Objectives
The School of Education seeks to:
1. To train educators in the light of the Seventh day Adventist mission of education which places emphasis on restoring the image of God in humankind through a harmonious development of the physical, mental, spiritual and social powers.
2. To impart to students knowledge and skills that will enable them to confidently handle secondary school courses.
3. To equip students with relevant knowledge and skills to enable them assume leadership roles in the educational systems and other institutions of society.
4. To develop students who will seek to identify themselves with and create a positive impact on the youth who make up a large percentage of our society.
5. To prepare candidates for higher degrees.

The School of education consists of the following departments:
• Department of Arts Education
• Department of Science Education
• Department of Language Education

Programs Offered in Secondary Education

The School of Education offers courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Arts with Education and Bachelor of Science with Education degrees. It also offers a Diploma in Education-Arts (Secondary). The Diploma in Education (Primary) is an in-service programme. There is no Diploma in Education - Science.


For the Bachelor of Arts with Education degree course, a student must have two teaching subjects selected from the following subjects: English Language, Literature in English, Economics, History, Geography, Religious studies and Kiswahili. For the Bachelor of Science with Education degree course, a student must select two teaching subjects from the following list: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Information Technology, and Mathematics.


Subject combinations for the Diploma in Education course are selected from the following: Geography, History, English Language, Literature in English, Religious studies and Kiswahili.


In addition to the teaching subjects, students are expected to do professional education courses, which include a research project and two sessions of school practice, each of eight (8) weeks. They are required to complete general education courses


Entry Requirements

For a BA or BSc with Education degree, one must satisfy the minimum university entry requirements. For a Diploma in Education, one must have at least two principal passes in the subjects chosen for a combination or an average of grade C (plain) and at least a C+ in the subject combination the student wants to study.

Teachers with a Diploma in Education qualify for a degree course; those with a Grade III Teaching Certificate or its equivalent may register for the diploma course.

The School of Education offers courses leading to the award of Bachelor of Arts with Education and Bachelor of Science with Primary Education degrees. It also offers a Diploma in Primary Education-Arts.


Primary Education programmes are in-service only.

For the Bachelor of Arts with Education degree course, a student must have two teaching subjects selected from the following subjects: English Language Education, Early Childhood Education, Religious Education and Social Studies Education.

For the Bachelor of Science with Primary Education degree course, a student must select two teaching subjects from the following list: Agriculture, Biology, Physics, Integrated Science and Mathematics. Subject combinations for the Diploma in Education course are selected from the following: Geography, History, English Language, Literature in English, Religious studies and Kiswahili.

In addition to the teaching subjects, students are expected to do professional education courses, which include a research project and two sessions of school practice, each of eight (8) weeks. They are required to complete general education courses

Requirements for Graduation

1. A student must pass all required courses for graduation.
2. The total number of credit units to be covered is 118 and 79 for degree and diploma students respectively.
3. A minimum grade of C- is required for a major, minor or profes sional education courses including the two school practices.
